Ejercicio físico durante el embarazo: beneficios sobre el feto, el recién nacido y el niño / Phisical exercise during pregnancy: benefits on the fetus, the newborn and the child

The evidence indicates that physical activity during pregnancy has great benefits for maternal health, but there is increasing evidence to support that it is also beneficial for the fetus, extending these benefits into childhood and adulthood. Physical exercise during pregnancy can have an effect on prenatal programming, creating a healthy environment in the uterus during a critical time for organs development. Among the potential benefits of physical exercise during pregnancy, both for the fetus and for the newborn, stand out the reduction in the risk of preterm delivery and macrosomia, protection against neural tube defects and, in neonates, a lower percentage of body fat and greater brain maturation. In children, it can stimulate healthy growth, be beneficial for neuromotor development and protect them from susceptibility to chronic diseases, with improvements in metabolic results and cardiovascular risk.
When numerous countries are carrying out different physical activity interventions to prevent and treat overweight and obesity in childhood, the first of these should be done during pregnancy, encouraging pregnant women to exercise, since which can potentially reduce the risk of childhood obesity.
